Hand-painted Rainbow Wall Mural

Create open play spaces; these spaces allow for little fingers and minds to wander
— Designer Tip

I’m so excited to share this post with you today - it’s a sweet and special space and one that I hold close to my heart.

This is my daughters room, it’s always been the most magical room in our home but last week we decided to kick it up a notch and paint this rainbow mural on her wall AND I LOVE IT! I’ve wanted to do something special in here for her for some time. I thought about doing hand painted woodland mushrooms or a lot of small rainbows like wallpaper or even a pretty wallpaper accent wall, but finally settled on this rainbow in the corner and I love how it turned out, our little one does too. The awesome thing is this can be done a million different ways in any part of your home, change up the colors or make the bands fun and wavey, add some color to your office space or outdoor patio wall.

It definitely brightens the space up and makes the room feel bigger (and more magical) than ever!

Creating a space for our little ones to thrive in -
The shelves are arranged for open ended, this allows for imaginative play with loose parts in baskets, stacks of books and blocks all right at her finger tips - with no rules or limitations. I rotate the toys and books on the shelves every few months to keep her interested in them too! I love designing little spaces for her to play and explore in, her little tepee is one of those places for her, seeing her little mind wander as she plays tea party with her stuffed friends is my absolute favorite. I strung twinkle lights through the top and put the cozy rug down to add a bit more magic to her story time with friends.

Rainbow Wall Mural DIY How to:
Supplies
- 8 ft piece of wood and drill
- Measuring Tape
- Handsaw
- Pencil
- Paint for Rainbow Strip
(we used Valspar paint in the color sample size - New Haven Rose, Romance, Summer Moon, Blue Arrow, Graceful Green)
- Painters tape and scissors
- Paint Brush

  1. We lightly marked on the wall where we wanted the top of the arch of the big band to start - for us that was 6 ft, we then marked 6 ft on the wood and sawed it down

  2. Then we marked small holes on the wood 5, 1 ft bands with 2 inches between each band (each rainbow arch is 1 ft wide with a 2 inches gap between each band)

  3. Drill holes (large enough for a pencil to go through) in the wood where you’ve marked the holes

  4. Put the wood on the wall with the pencil inside the hole - have someone hold the bottom of the wood in place and slide the top of the wood down the wall in an arch, this will create an arch sketch on the wall

  5. Continue this for all 5 arches

  6. Use the painters tape to outline the pencil lines

  7. Don’t be intimidated by this part - Once you have the one side done, sketched out with pencil and outlined with tape you should be able to eyeball the other side of the corner carrying the rainbow over

*Note: our smallest arch is all on one wall, whether you do yours this way or not make sure to start at the smallest arch when sketching out the other side of your corner

  8. Outline the other side with tape

  9. Paint each band, I did 2 coats on each

  10. Remove the tape, erase pencil and touch up the in lines of the bands with the same color as your wall

  11. Enjoy!

I found some inspiration here on A Beautiful Mess, we prepped ours a bit different but either way I hope you find inspiration here or there and tackle this rainbow wall diy!
